Find Your Leather Jacket Fit
The right fit starts with clear measurements, not guesswork. This leather jacket size guide from Shearling Jacket explains how to measure your body, compare a jacket you already own, and choose a fit that suits the way you dress.
Use the size information provided for your chosen product where available. Size labels alone are not enough to compare different designs. If the measurements or measuring method are unclear, contact Shearling Jacket before ordering.
Before You Start Measuring
Use a flexible measuring tape, stand naturally, and ask someone to help with shoulder and sleeve measurements. Wear a lightweight layer for body measurements. Keep the tape comfortably close without pulling it tight, and record whether your measurements are in inches or centimetres.
Body measurements and finished-jacket measurements are different. Do not compare one directly with the other. Confirm which type your chosen product's size guide uses before selecting a size.
How to Take Your Body Measurements
Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, passing it under your arms and across your back. Keep the tape level and your arms relaxed. Breathe normally rather than expanding your chest.
Waist and Lower Body
Measure around your natural waist without drawing in your stomach. For longer jackets, a measurement around the fullest part of your hips may also be useful. Follow any design-specific instructions provided for your selected jacket.
Shoulder Width
With help, measure across your upper back from the outer edge of one shoulder to the other. Shoulder measuring methods can vary, so confirm the required endpoints before submitting measurements for a made-to-measure order.
Sleeve Length
With your arm relaxed and slightly bent, measure from the edge of your shoulder down to your preferred sleeve endpoint at the wrist. Some size guides measure sleeves from the centre back of the neck instead. Always use the method requested for your chosen jacket.
Preferred Jacket Length
Ask someone to measure from the base of your neck at the back down to where you want the jacket hem to sit. Treat this as a fit preference unless the product's measurement instructions specify the same starting point.
How to Measure a Jacket You Already Own
Choose a jacket with a fit you like, fasten it, and lay it flat on a smooth surface without stretching it. Only compare these measurements with a size chart that explicitly gives finished-garment measurements using the same method.
- Chest width: Measure straight across from underarm to underarm. This is a flat width, not a full chest circumference.
- Shoulders: Measure across the back from one shoulder seam to the other, if the jacket has clearly defined shoulder seams.
- Sleeves: Measure from the shoulder seam to the cuff along the outside of the sleeve.
- Back length: Measure from the base of the collar seam to the bottom hem, excluding the collar.
Do not use this method for direct comparison when the two jackets have different measuring instructions or substantially different constructions.
Choose Your Preferred Fit
A Closer Fit
Look for a silhouette that follows your shape while allowing you to fasten the jacket, reach forward, and move your arms comfortably. A close fit should not mean restricted movement.
Room for Layering
If you plan to wear knitwear underneath, consider that extra layer when reviewing the product measurements. Faux fur lining also occupies space inside a jacket, so check the guidance for the specific design rather than automatically choosing your usual size.
Between Sizes?
Do not automatically size up or down. Compare the relevant measurements, consider your preferred layers, and contact Shearling Jacket with the product name and your measurements for guidance.
Made-to-Measure Leather Jackets
For a more individual fit, ask about made-to-measure availability for your selected style. Confirm the required measuring method before submitting your details, and keep body measurements separate from measurements taken from an existing jacket.

Leather Jacket Sizing Questions
Should I order my usual clothing size?
Use it as a starting point, not a guarantee. Compare your measurements with the information for the exact jacket you want to order.
Should I leave extra space when measuring my body?
Record your actual body measurements without adding an allowance unless you are specifically instructed otherwise. Explain your preferred fit and intended layers separately.
Can I choose a tight jacket and wait for it to stretch?
Do not rely on stretching to correct an uncomfortable fit. Choose a jacket that allows comfortable movement from the start.
What if I cannot find a size chart?
Contact Shearling Jacket with the product name or link before ordering. Ask for the relevant measurements and whether they describe the body or the finished jacket.
